BIBA -
leading the way in UK insurance
The British
Insurance Brokers' Association is leading the way in UK Insurance. It
is the largest and longest established trade association for the
general insurance market. It offers professionalism and expertise to
both the industry and the consumer and has a thriving membership of
2,000 firms employing more than 37,000 individuals.
The Association
was formed originally as BIBA, in 1977, from four different
organisations - The Association of Insurance Brokers, the Corporation
of Insurance Brokers, the Federation of Insurance Brokers and the
Lloyd's Insurance Brokers Association.
In
January 1988, with the Financial Services Act, a need arose
for all brokers in the general insurance and investment
business to work together and be jointly represented. BIBA
extended its membership to include Independent Financial
Advisers, becoming the British Insurance and Investment
Brokers' Association (BIIBA). In 1994 increasing pressure
upon the UK's Independent Financial Advisers led to a call
for one strong association to represent their interests.
Consequently, BIIBA was instrumental in establishing its
sister association, the IFA Association. As a result, in
September 1999, it was felt that BIIBA's expertise lay in
general insurance, hence the relinquishing of 'Investment' .
